Above: Women’s housing program participants help Charleston shine at the “Team Up to Clean Up” event.

Our organization has been keeping busy during the spring and summer months. We’re beyond grateful for the support of people like you in our community for the endless support of our efforts. We really couldn’t do the life saving work that we do every day without it.

Housing

Summer Activities

Things have been busy in the WVSL Housing program. Participants in Charleston have been enjoying some fun activities such as bowling and going to the movies together.

New Men’s Home in Morgantown

We are thrilled to announce the addition of a new mens home in Morgantown. None of this would be possible without the unwavering support of Monongalia County Commissioners Jeff Arnett, Sean Sikora, Tom Bloom, and the West Virginia First Foundation. Thank you on behalf of every life that will be altered for the better because of this home and the families that will be forever changed due to recovery. Together we are rewriting the narrative and making a difference in our community.

Kitchen Item Donations

We need new or lightly used dishes and pots and pans for our housing program! If you can help donate new pots and pans for a good cause please contact our Morgantown team by calling 304-602-3305 or email Elisha at elisha@wvsls.com to arrange drop-off.

Peers

Peers at Cheat Fest

This year we were proud to host an alcohol and substance free space at Cheat Fest! The space offered camaraderie and resources to attendees in recovery. The tent had certified Peer Recovery Support Specialists working at the table who were happy to answer any questions anyone may have regardless of their recovery status.

Box at Tennessee Ave turns 1!

2734 doses of naloxone, 3554 fentanyl test strips, 1681 xylazine test strips- the first year of box at 408 Tennessee Ave in Charleston, WV has been monumental!

Thank You Herb Linn

We’d like to congratulate Herb Linn on his retirement from WVU Health Sciences. Mr. Linn’s contributions to our community and West Virginia peer recovery have been monumental. His varied career led to his leading an effort to plan and implement SUD programs in WV hospital emergency departments. We’d like to applaud him for all his accomplishments and thank him for all of his efforts to address the opioid overdose epidemic in the state.

Police and Peers

From the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office-

“We’re proud to share a powerful and encouraging update from our recent “You Are Not Alone” outreach held on June 18th–19th at the Sheetz in Beckley.

Sgt. B.J. Adkins was notified by Tyson Kincaid and Heather Williams, peer specialists with the “Peers and Police” program, that two individuals they engaged with during the event have entered treatment today! Heather is a peer specialist with the BCPD and Tyson works out of Fayette County but also helps out in Raleigh County.

While not everyone may be ready in the moment, these outreach efforts plant the seed. Thanks to the dedication and follow-up by Tyson and Heather, help was available when these individuals decided they were ready.

Sheriff Frank Priddy and Chief Deputy Frankie Shelton want to extend their sincere thanks to both Tyson Kincaid and Heather Williams for their continued commitment to helping those in need.

This is proof that the outreach works. It shows that through compassion, consistency, and collaboration, real change is possible. We’re proud to continue working with the “Peers and Police” program and all others who make this mission a reality.”

Tyson says that he’s thankful to have been a hand in helping Raleigh County get involved with the Police and Peers program, which uses a variety of ways to help individuals find their very own recovery journey.
